Master Samuel D. Naples
Born on the second of October in 1957, a
student of Saint Stanislaus Grade School and
Cardinal Mooney High school. He is
currently a 7th degree black belt under the
leadership of Grandmaster Chun, Kae Bae of
San Marcos, California, his first and only
instructor.
Martial Arts interest began in the 60's when
Sam began reading martial arts magazines
from the newsstand. His official training
began in 1970 as an overweight child with no
confidence and very low self esteem who was
certain that the martial arts was a way to
change. Sam received his black belt in 1973
with only 2 1/2 years of training, the quickest
black belt in the schools history (it takes 4
years).
In 1973 Sam won his first martial arts
tournament as a 15 year old brown belt
competing in the adult divisions winning
first in forms and 3rd in fighting. Sam went
on to three times at the All American Open
Taekwon Do, Karate & Kung Fu
Championships in New York's Madison Square Garden. In 1979 he was the
Ohio State Middleweight Champion, in 1980 the National Open Winner, and
All American Hall of Fame Inductee in 1991, four years before Grandmaster
Chun his instructor was inducted.
Sam was a philosophy major at Y.S.U. with three years of schooling. In 1980
all of the Steel industry left Youngstown devastating the local economy. Sam
decided that running the martial arts school needed his full focus since he
became the manager of the school in 1979 at 21 years old so he discontinued
college to focus on business and teaching.
Not having the time to go to school Sam got the college catalogue from Y.S.U.
and looked up the business classes and then read all of the books that were
required to get a business degree. He also read Fortune, Forbes, Inc.
Financial Times and the WSJ to educate himself. Sam began reading many
motivational and self help books including "Think & Grow Rich" and "The
One Minute Manager" in order to be a better communicate with himself and
with others.
As a instructor and business manager Sam could no longer compete in
martial arts tournaments (it is bad form to compete against your students) so
Sam became a martial arts tournament coordinator running to All American
Open Championship at Madison Square Garden, The American Invitational
Championship in Washington, D.C. (most prestigious) as well as many other
tournaments in the Eastern and Northern parts of the United States. He also
hosted The American Open Championship in Boardman, Ohio.
Sam currently owns the Boardman School with two employees in
Youngstown, Ohio and is a member of the board of directors of the Van Sickle
Foundation "For Our Kids" which focus' upon children that fall between the
cracks of the National Charities. Grandmaster Chun Taekwon Do (or Family
Martial Arts as he's known in Youngstown) currently has 110 students, about
half of them are under the age of 18. Sam is certified as an instructor by The
National Association of Professional Martial Artists, NAPMA out of St.
Petersburg, Fla. and he and his staff are currently going through the
Instructor Certification program of the International Martial Arts Association
(Washington, D.C.)  which is taught by Black Belts and Educators who are
Anthony Robbins' graduates. Anthony's Technology translated very readily
to the martial arts and vice versa.
As part of the curriculum at Naples' Family Martial Arts Center students are
taught programs such as "How to Defeat the Bully Without Fighting" and
S.T.A.R. program which teaches the children values and was developed by
the Jefferson Center for Character Education. The goal is martial arts training
at Family Martial Arts is to develop the Black Belt Attitude, which means
working at the highest level possible the "Black Belt Level" at home, in school
and in the martial arts. Students are indoctrinated with "My Goal Is Black
Belt Excellence" and with the school moto "We are Taekwon Do Jido Kwan,
highly motivated, highly dedicated and on a quest to be the best!"
