4 Phases of Training
The maturity of a Martial Artist is quite like the growth of a human being. There is first
infancy, then youth, young adulthood & maturity. In Martial Arts training we break training
down to four phases of training.

The first two phases of training at Grandmaster Chun Tae Kwon Do are 90% mental. We are
most concerned with developing concentration and self-control within the student. Phase one is
the white-orange-yellow belt phase of training, this is the first 4-6 months of training. Once
the student reaches the Yellow (High Yellow for little dragons and juniors) belt level they
have moved into phase two. They know how to stand, how to move, the names of quite a few
techniques, they are starting to get in shape. During Phase II our goals are 1) to develop the
desire for the Black Belt. 2) to show you that with continuous persistent training you can
make it to black belt. 3) to allow you to succeed at everything you attempt in the martial arts
4) to qualify you as a member of the Grandmaster Chun Tae Kwon Do Black Belt Club.

The third Phase of development begins at the Blue Belt (Green for juniors) Level. Phase III
training is 50% mental and 50% technique. The student has had 9-11 months of concentrating,
and self discipline. We begin to become much more concerned with discipline during this phase
of training. Things that were accepted at the Phase I-II levels are no longer acceptable at
this level.

Maturity, Phase IV, is the Green-Brown Belt (High Brown-Black/Brown for little dragons and
juniors) level of training. The test for Green belt is a retest of all previous material for
adults. This level of training is 70% technique, the discipline is very strict. It is at this level
of training that we truly mold you into Black Belt Material. All of the tests at the Green Belt
(High Brown-Black/Brown for juniors) and above level are cumulative. Discipline and
expectations are extremely high, but you have had 2 years of training to prepare you for this
type of training. The goal during this phase of training is to become competent at sparring.
Most Black belt members attend class at least 3x per week during Phase IV.

Because the intensity and quality of training is so different at each level of training we
divided the levels in two. Phase I & Phase II together and Phase III & Phase IV together.
